Hayao Miyazaki Update: Ponyo

Finally, the latestest & longestest awaited Miyazaki animated feature Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea has hit the cinemas in Japan a couple of days ago.

As with all Miyazaki animation, it's a carefully hand drawn labour of love which took 4 years or so to complete. Just imagine that. Toddlers who were waiting for it years ago have now all grown up & married with their own family & kids.

But of course I'm exaggerating as usual. 4 years is just enough to keep everyone in suspense. And with Miyazaki, no matter what he's doing, you'd always know that it's worth the wait.

At first impression, I'm sure you'd think the whole thing looks babyish. I did too.

But I have the confidence & belief that Miyazaki will consistently deliver one more time a piece of work that touches the heart, & move our emotions & imagination.

Much like what was done with Disney's Lilo & Stitch, Ponyo marks a return to the traditional watercolour technique for Miyazaki, who has not been shy to adopt CGI seamlessly into his previous features.

As I've mentioned before, this movie reeks with super-bubbly charm. I mean just look at this little girl.

Now, how can you say no to a super-cuteness like that?

It looks like advertising didn't waste any time. Even before the movie came out, Ponyo became a drink.

Now, all we have to do is wait for it to come out on DVD, cos as sure as elephants don't fly, it'll never be released in the cinemas here.
